Discipline Policy

A good standard of discipline is essential in creating an atmosphere for learning. All pupils are made aware of the main school rules and they should exercise self-discipline to maintain behaviour within these bounds. The classroom and day to day discipline will be dealt with by the class teacher. Issues relating to discipline and pupils in the Early Stages will be dealt with by the Deputy Head Teacher (Early Stages).

Where serious or persistent misbehaviour occurs, the pupil will be referred to the Head Teacher who will deal with the matter.

It is the policy of the school to inform parents of unacceptable behaviour by their children, and if necessary arrange for the parents to visit the school to discuss the matter. With good co-operation and parent support, the disciplinary procedures should ensure that high standards of discipline are maintained and an atmosphere conducive to study and learning is available to every member of the school.

School rules exist mainly to protect the child within the school environment. The aim is self-discipline on the part of the pupil. The discipline policy of Cauldeen School is fair, firm but friendly.

Although bullying is not a significant problem in Cauldeen School, there is an active policy to help prevent it and to assist pupils to deal effectively with it should it occur. Leaflets with notes for parents and notes for pupils are available from the school office, and copies are posted on the Parent Information board located outside the school office. Bullying behaviour in any form will not be tolerated in Cauldeen School.

Guidance

Pupils are required to conduct themselves in an orderly manner at all times.

Pupils may not leave the school grounds during the normal school hours without first having obtained permission.

Proper care must be taken of all school property and equipment. Pupils should arrive for school and class on time

Absences are only justified
(a) in the case of illness, and
(b) when permission has been granted by the school

After an absence every pupil must bring an explanatory note from his/her parent or guardian. If the child is not returning to school after lunch, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to inform the school.

The school should be informed if children have to leave the school for appointments and the child must be collected by a responsible adult.

Money or valuables must not be left in the cloakrooms or classrooms, but should be held by the class teacher for safekeeping.

Pupils must stay in the designated play areas allocated for this purpose.

Pupils with pierced ears should only wear studs (not hoop type sleepers). This rule is made with the safety of pupils in mind-particularly when playing games in the playground and gym.

Items of jewellery should not be worn by children in school. Apart from the risk of loss of these items, they often prove to be a distraction when children are working.

  Child Protection

From time to time incidents can occur within the school setting which cause concern and could indicate that a pupil is suffering some form of abuse.

In terms of Highland Child Protection Committee Inter-agency Protection Guidelines, Education Service staff must report such incidents to Social Work Services which can lead to a joint Social Work/Police investigation.

All agencies involved in Child Protection are obliged to make the welfare of children their paramount consideration and this will be the priority for Education Service staff.

More information about Child Protection Procedures within Highland can be obtained from the Child Protection Development Officer, Mrs Susan MacLaren, Highland Child Protection Committee, Kinmylies Building, Leachkin Road, Inverness, IV3 8NN - Telephone (01463) 703483- Fax (01463 713237).

  Sports Facilities

Cauldeen School has extensive playing fields. A football/hockey pitch is marked out (grass), and a tarmac area is marked for basketball/netball. Extensive use is made of the playing fields for football training and matches, as well as their extensive use on the School Sports Day,

Playground markings have been laid out throughout the playground to encourage the playing of modern and traditional games. Classroom assistants have all received inservice training on playground games.

The gym hall is large; having two badminton courts with rings for basketball/netball, and is well equipped.

Presently Primary 4, 5, 6 and 7 receive tuition in swimming at the Inverness Aquadome.

  Extra Curricular Activities

The school tries to arrange an annual concert for parents and the community. In the evening there are a number of clubs who use the school facilities that the pupils can join such as Dancing and Girls Brigade. Regular football practices for pupils from P2 to P7 take place after school..

The school also enters swimming, girl's hockey, badminton, basketball and football teams for certain competitions and an athletics team represents Cauldeen at the Inter-School Sports competing against other schools.

Parents are encouraged to assist with extra curricular activities and the school would welcome any parent who wishes to give time and expertise to running an activity such as sports teams, drama club, chess club etc. after school.

Educational Visits of many kinds are arranged both locally and further afield to compliment our educational programmes of work. This includes the opportunity to visit other areas of Scotland, the UK as well as continental Europe, where pupils can use their French in real situations. To date successful extended visits have been organised to York, Dundee, Glasgow, Edinburgh, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

  School Meals

Excellent, nutritious school meals are prepared fresh each day on the school premises by our staff, giving the pupils a choice of main courses in the two course meal provided.

Those taking school meals regularly should pay the total amount on the Friday morning for the following week. Tickets are available from the canteen at breaktime. On receipt of monies, children will be issued with ticket(s) and the teaching staff will keep them in a secure place for the pupils. Emergencies may arise, and on these occasions a ticket can be purchased from the Cook during morning interval.

Any parent/guardian paying by cheque must make the cheque payable to "The Highland Council" not to the school.

The present charge for a school meal can be found in appendix 1.

Free School Meals

Under the Social Security Act 1986 families receiving Income Support will qualify for free school meals. Application Forms for free school meals are available from the school office or the Area Education Office.

Snack & Sandwich Bar Service

Fresh sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, yoghurt, fruit and drinks are available through the snack service. The system of payment for using the service is by the pupils paying direct to the canteen staff at point of purchase. Teachers will take in this cash for safekeeping only if it is in a sealed envelope or plastic sachet with the child's name clearly marked.

Packed Lunches

Facilities are available for pupils to eat packed lunches in school. On warm and sunny days there is a picnic area available for the children's use in front of the canteen. It should be noted, however, that glass bottles and cans are not permitted in school under The Highland Council's 1980 safety regulations. It is advisable that where plastic containers for drinks are brought, they should be in a plastic bag to prevent liquids leaking on to schoolbooks.

Early Closures & Health and Safety

Closures

It is usually possible to give advanced warning to parents of early closing. In some circumstances (e.g. power failure or extreme weather conditions) this may not be possible. Our first priority is always the safety of the children, and no child is sent knowingly to an empty house.

The school will from time to time issue bad weather guidelines and/or forms for parents to complete so that the school knows where each child should go if forced early closure occurs. Please inform the school of any changes in your arrangements

During adverse weather conditions parents are advised to listen to local radio stations who issue news regarding weather and traffic conditions, school closures, etc. Should parents have any doubt concerning a possible early closing, the school now has a dial-in service if there is a risk of closure due to adverse weather. This allows parents to listen to a recorded message from the Head Teacher.

To enquire about school closures telephone the Highland Council number: 0870 054 6999 then enter the schools own pin number when prompted: 041690.

Should parents have any doubt concerning this they can also telephone the school for information on 235905.

Health & Safety

Minor cuts and bruises are attended to by the school secretary or staff. An auxiliary is always on duty in the medical room. In the case of children becoming unwell in school the school contacts the emergency contact if they are available.

Please keep the school informed of any changes in emergency contact.

The school doctor and nurse visit on a regular basis to provide a routine screening service on school entry, and give routine eye and hearing tests throughout your child's school career. Parents are invited to such screening and tests and can if they wish attend.

The school also enjoys the service of a visiting speech therapist on a weekly basis.

It is important that parents inform the school of any medical condition which might put the pupil at risk or affect their educational progress. The confidential nature of this information will be respected.

  parent Organisations

Parent & Friends Group

The Cauldeen Parent and Friends Group has been running for a number of years. All parents can, and are encourage to attend the groups meeting and become involved with the other parents in activities which benefit all the pupils and the school as a whole.

New parents into the area have the opportunity to meet other parents and members of the community in a relaxed informal atmosphere with the common interest of the school.

Dates and times of meetings are indicated in the monthly School Newsletter.

The School Board

The School Board is elected by the parents of pupils in Cauldeen School. The Board consists of four elected parent representatives, one staff representative and two co-opted members.

The School Board has a number of functions and duties, some of which include promoting contact between the school, parents and the community, ascertaining the parent's views and reporting on the Board's activities to the parents. Other duties include participation in the selection of senior promoted staff, approving school budgets, controlling the use of the school buildings, outwith school hours, setting occasional holidays.

As parents of a pupil in Cauldeen School you have the right to vote in School Board elections, or stand for election to the School Board.
